We are excited to welcome our newest member of the Antlers Public Schools family!
Samary Breshears was born and raised in Puerto Rico and grew up in the town of Luquillo. She completed her Bachelor's Degree at the Universidad de Puerto Rico before beginning her teaching career. She taught English at the local middle school for 2 and a half years before joining the US Navy. Her military service took her from Puerto Rico to Norfolk, VA, where she served for 5 years.
After completing her enlistment, Mrs.Breshears returned to her passion for education. She taught Spanish for 6 years at a school for students with learning differences. She then moved to Connecticut, where she taught ESL and Spanish at New London High School. When her husband was transferred back to the Norfolk Base in VA, she continued her teaching career by teaching ESL for 10 years at Northside Middle School.
In June of this year, she and her family moved to Antlers, where they plan to stay and make their home. Antlers Public Schools is a particularly special place for her family because her husband is a graduate of Antlers Public Schools. Mrs. Breshears had heard how great his experience had been, and when she was ready to begin the next chapter of her professional life, Antlers seemed like the perfect fit.
After working on her credentials to become a school counselor, she discovered that Antlers High School had an opening for a school counselor. She applied and, after going through the interview process, was offered the position. Antlers High School already feels like home to her, and she says, "I love the school and the community."
Mrs. Breshears' journey into school counseling grew naturally from her experiences as a Bilingual ESL teacher. She often interpreted for her English Learners when they needed to see the school counselor. She also saw firsthand that the English Learners population has many needs that sometimes are not met due to a language barrier. Being the connection between those two things immersed her in school counseling skills. She enjoyed it so much that she decided to go to school for it. As she puts it, "I didn't choose school counseling, school counseling chose me."
Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family. They enjoy watching TV series and movies together, and she also likes listening to audiobooks and traveling with her family when they can.
Mrs. Breshears brings a wealth of experience and a passion for helping students to her new role. Her teaching qualifications include School Counseling, Spanish, English, and English as a Second Language.
Please join us in giving Mrs. Samary Breshears a warm welcome to Antlers Public Schools! We are so happy to have her as part of our school family and community.
